So my first inspiration was to do a kind of copyright-safe spin on The Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby,” with staccato and pizzicato strings and so on, as they might do in one of those documentaries where the filmmakers can’t afford to use the actual songs—hence “Ruddegar Digby.” It’s not a cover, except for maybe the very end part. After recording that, I felt like I could improvise a nice piano version of “Eleanor Rigby” by ear (that is, from memory) without much thought, which I did. This fourth take is a little more polished than that one was but basically the same. Someday I’ll record an album just of Beatles covers. On the list of things to do!
